He hasn’t yet made a competitive start for Celtic, and yet gossip is rife today that a Jahmai Simpson-Pusey Celtic exit is on the cards.
The young Manchester City B team star, who joined Celtic on a season long loan last month, has yet to feature in a starting line up for Celtic.
Last night, it was confirmed that he, rather ignominiously, has been left out of Celtic’s Europa League squad.
Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the man billed as one of England’s most promising young defenders, and who was said to be the long-awaited firm partner to Cameron Carter-Vickers in Celtic’s defense.
European Omission Leaves Question Marks on Simpson-Pusey Celtic Future
This begs the question: why bother bringing him in at all if we’re not going to play him in Europe. We already have a more than capable domestic deputy in Dane Murray.
Again it points to chaotic, and splintered approach to player recruitment that has, it seems, characterized Celtic’s entire transfer policy this summer.
There were rumors circulating last week, though I stress at time of writing I have been unable to confirm them, and given the total lack of transparency from the club, its unlikely we’ll ever know for sure.
The rumor suggested that Simpson-Pusey had been instructed to turn out for the Celtic B-Team as part of his belated pre-season training, and to show the coaching staff he was up to speed in terms of being able to play a full 90 minutes.
It has been alleged that the player refused to play for the B team, considering it beneath a player of his standing and ability.
Now, if, and stress this remains a major “if”, that was the case, he should be punted onto the next bus back to Manchester, never to be seen anywhere near Celtic Park ever again.
Of course, there is also the counter rumor, that this whole B-team drama was made up and then leaked to various sources in the Celtic fan sphere to try and smooth the path towards Celtic ripping up an agreement with a player that, in all honesty, should probably never have been made in the first place.
Again, one simple statement from someone at the club could clear all this up, yet the silence remains deafening. And where silence has lease, rumor, speculation and innuendo can take root and run riot.
The omission of what was, considering the league he came from, one of our higher profile summer signings from the Europa League campaign suggests all is not right between club, manager and player. Just who is in the wrong, and what exactly has happened, remains unclear.
However, don’t be surprised if Jahmai Simpson-Pusey is never seen in a Celtic shirt again
