CALLUM WILSON CELTIC MOVE IS KYOGO ALL OVER AGAIN

Celtic still have only 1 loan signing to show from this current window.

I read this morning, courtesy of Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph, that Celtic are potentially lining up a move for West Ham striker Callum Wilson.

Unfortunately, the progress of this move, or lack thereof so far, proves that Celtic’s recruitment team still haven’t learned the lessons of the embarrassing collapse of our move to bring back Kyogo earlier this month.

I’ll just say before we get to the main point today, something I want to make clear:

Callum Wilson is an excellent footballer. His performances with Newcastle, West Brom and now West Ham, where he has 4 goals from 18 appearances this season, over a number of years prove this.

Also, he may be turning 34 next month, but that also shouldn’t be a major consideration at this point. If this move goes ahead, I believe it would be a short-term deal. A similar comparison might be when Rangers signed Jermaine Defoe a few years ago under similar circumstances.

His advanced years were highlighted as a negative, but I think even us, as Celtic fans would have to acknowledge that he did quite well during his time at the stadium John Brown player for.

However, as I said earlier, I believe the way this proposed Callum Wilson Celtic deal has progressed thus far points to a wider problem, and highlights why I don’t think it will work out.

The Problem with Callum Wilson: Celtic Shouldn’t Need to Convince Our Targets

According to Sky Sports, Celtic are in the process of “sounding out” Wilson about a possible transfer. To me, this already has alarm signals blaring in my mind.

Look, Celtic isn’t a good fit for everyone. And someone of Wilson’s profile, as a 9 times capped England international could easily go somewhere like Saudi Arabia and probably make far more than we could ever dream of offering. And good luck to him if that’s what he wants.

However, Celtic have a very specific need right now and we need players who are 100% dedicated. This is going to be a three-way battle between ourselves, Hearts and The Govan Dodgers that may well go down to the final day of the season. Just to be clear, I am not questioning Wilson’s professionalism, but if there is even the slightest doubt in his mind that Celtic is the right move for him at this point then we should look elsewhere.

After a very indifferent season thus far, Celtic’s entire squad have a point to prove. We need to show the rest of Scottish football that we still deserve to be champions. I believe it’s essential that anyone we bring in during this transfer window has that same hunger, that same point to prove.

If the Sky Sports report is accurate, I think Celtic should look elsewhere. Nothing against the player, but we can’t afford any passengers this season.

This is the same mistake we made with Kyogo. The player clearly wasn’t sold on a return move to Celtic. Rather than wasting time trying to convince him, we should have said thank you and goodbye as soon as that became apparent. The same applies here.
