CALVIN STENGS: CELTIC “MAKE INITIAL CONTACT” WITH FEYENOORD STAR

Is Calvin Stengs the winger Celtic are looking for?
Is Calvin Stengs the winger Celtic are looking for?

As far as European clubs go, Feyenoord are kind of in a similar situation to Celtic these days.

Historically a huge name in European football, a past European Cup winner (at our own expense in 1970), but also a team that today, struggles to financially compete with the ridiculous levels of cash being splashed around in the top 5 European leagues.

So, when the read this morning via our friends over at Celts Are Here, that there is a genuine interest from Celtic in acquiring highly rated Feyenoord winger Calvin Stengs, I was greatly encouraged.

However, as I will explain, a deal is still someway off. Don’t expect Stengs to be a last-minute addition to the squad before the Kairat game on Wednesday.

Who is Calvin Stengs, Celtic’s Latest Transfer Target?

At 26 years old, Stengs is a bit older than the profile of player Celtic typically go for these days. However, he is a full Dutch international, though his last cap was almost 2 years ago, when he scored a hat trick against Gibraltar.

As a product of the AZ Alkmaar youth academy, Stengs developed under current Liverpool boss Arne Slot when he was in charge of AZ.

Later, the winger would later go on to play with Nice in France, before helping Antwerp secure their first Belgian Premier League title in 66 years in the 2022-23 season.

His form at Antwerp earned him a move back to The Netherlands where he linked up with Arne Slot once again at Feyenoord.

His return of 7 goals in 41 games since joining Feyenoord isn’t earth-shattering, but its decent enough for a wide player more focused on creating chances than finishing them. We’re also talking about a player whom Arne Slot opted to sign twice, and he knows a thing or two about sourcing talented individuals.

Stengs is a popular figure in Rotterdam, despite not being a guaranteed starter every week at the time of writing. Celtic would still need to come up with a substantial fee to secure his services. Stengs still has 2 years left to run on his current deal with Feyenoord.

A pacy winger, capable of creating chances, with Calvin Stengs, Celtic would definitely have a very useful addition to the squad on their hands.

However, as I said, this deal is still quite a way off from completion. Initial, informal discussions between the player’s representatives and Celtic have taken place, and dialogue is said to be ongoing.

We don’t know if Stengs would fancy a move to Scotland, however, a decent result in midweek to take us that bit closer to Champions League football could certainly sweeten any potential deal.

Much like the Louis Munteanu situation we discussed yesterday, this is another one that may largely hinge on how Celtic get on over the next 2 weeks.
