“CULTURE” OR CASH? RANGERS TAKEOVER LEAVES FANS WITH A SIMPLE CHOICE

You’ve got to hand it to hand it to The Rangers support. Nobody does self-sabotage quite like them.

The long drawn out saga of the Rangers Takeover now seems to have become part of that mind-numbing tedium of 21st century discourse: "The Culture War".

Although, unlike actual war, there is no sudden rush from Ibrox towards the shipyards this time.

If Rangers Takeover Goes Through, Their “Culture” is Dead

The Union Bears today reminded us all once again why we call them Scotland’s Shame. They chose to double down on their utter disgrace of a tifo from last weekend.

Just when the smart thing to do would be to shut up and take your medicine, they decided instead to take the nuclear option.

They unfurled a banner at today’s match against Aberdeen which read: “Jumped the Gun, Lost the Fans, No Apology, No Surrender”

At this point they are either painfully thick, or just so blinded by their own bigotry they can’t see the damage they are doing to their own club.

Then again, it could be a lovely little interbred marriage of the two.

I still remain skeptical that this takeover will go ahead at all. At this point, I’m not going to say the whole thing is a fake. However, its clear these Americans are not the sugar daddy The Rangers support thinks they deserve.

The only way this takeover can work is by forcing this absolute mess of a football club to live within its own, extremely limited means.

That means they will remain a distant second, behind Celtic financially, for many years to come.

Under the Rangers Takeover, part of this new era of “responsible management” will also include, finally, efforts to improve the club’s image and it’s standing outside its own immediate supporters.

In other words, the bigotry, the hate, the “no surrender” tifos will have to go.

The recent actions from the Rangers Board have been a sign that this is the way things are going to be from now on, if the takeover goes through.

This hasn’t gone down well with the Ibrox hoard. It hasn’t gone down well at all.

A report on The Herald’s Website, in addition to today’s embarrassing display of childish petulance also highlights the backlash the Rangers board faced at a recent meeting with fan groups.

The minutes of this meeting, held last week, included the following: “"The strength of feeling among the fanbase on the issue is very strong in terms of the club's handling of the situation and this was echoed by fan groups and firmly conveyed.

"The club's statement was perceived as being issued too quickly and in a reactionary manner.

"There is a recurring frustration that while the club acts quickly to condemn its own fans, it does not consistently defend our own supporters when they are the target of provocative or offensive actions by others."

In other words, it’s always someone else’s fault.

You can almost picture it. Wee staunch Billy, calling out the Rangers board for attacking his “culture” and “history”.

“Never mind all the violence, bigotry and racism we vomit out into the public domain every week. What about them Fenians and their Palestine Flags?”

The chickens are finally coming home to roost here. When this truth finally gets through to the more bone-headed elements of The Rangers support, don’t be surprised if there’s a sudden groundswell of fan pressure against the American takeover.

These morons really would rather embrace eternal mediocrity, lagging miles behind Celtic, than let go of their petty, antiquated culture of hatred.

Fears Leads to Anger, Anger Leads to hate...” Well, you know the rest. Like classic movie supervillains, The Rangers support have once again let their own hatred, ignorance, self-delusion and bitterness hold them back from becoming a genuinely better football club.

Let them stew in the loneliness and mediocrity of hate. Celtic will move forward, we do not need, and never have needed a strong Rangers to propel us onto bigger and better things.
