IF CELTIC, PETER LAWWELL REALLY WANTED TO “BURY RANGERS”, THEY COULD HAVE

As usual, the death of Rangers is always someone else's fault.
As usual, the death of Rangers is always someone else's fault.

Throughout all the tantrums, all the meltdowns, all the side-splitting hilarity that we’ve all enjoyed since Rangers imploded under the pressure of their own hubris in 2012, one theme emanating from Ibrox has stayed consistent throughout: “It wisnae us! It was someone else’s fault!”

With the willing and able assistance of a still-compliant media, former Rangers (Requiescat In Pace) owner, David Murray continued this sad trend in today’s Daily Record.

The latest bogeyman to blame for all the hurt, suffering and pain (I’ve especially enjoyed witnessing the pain) that first Rangers and now their Tribute Act have suffered over the past 13 years, is none other than Peter Lawwell.

It shouldn’t really be surprising. I’ve read enough acute paranoia pieces from Rangers fans and Rangers fan adjacent media, blaming Peter Lawwell for all their ills, over the years to write a Dan Brown style novel.

Daily Record Plays into Anti-Celtic, Peter Lawwell Paranoia in Desperate Cry for Attention

Adding to this burning pyre of innuendo and accusation (I thought most Bears waited until the 12th before starting poorly planned fires), The Daily Record just comes out and says what the most deranged Ibrox denizens have been screaming from their padded cells since 2012.

To quote the article directly: “The former Parkhead chief exec – now chairman – has long been accused of holding huge influence in Scottish football’s corridors of power.”

Accused by whom? And while we’re at it, what evidence, if any, do you have to back up such a needlessly inflammatory accusation?

Funnily enough, the Record didn’t elaborate on their outrageous slur on the Celtic Chairman.

Now, I’m no fan of Peter Lawwell, I think that’s a well-documented matter of public record at this point. But he certainly hasn’t done anything like what Murray is insinuating and the Record is amplifying in today’s story.

Let’s not forget it was fan power, not the clubs themselves who forced some semblance of fair play upon Scottish football, by demanding in the summer of 2012, that the new Rangers begin their existence in Scottish Football’s 4th tier.

If Lawwell was genuinely as powerful or as personally vindictive towards Rangers as Murray claims, do you really think he would have allowed the other SPFL clubs to show that level of leniency? Such leniency certainly wasn’t shown to Third Lanark, Clydebank or most recently Gretna.

All of those defunct clubs, incidentally, went bust with a mere fraction of the liabilities Murray had allowed Rangers to accrue over decades of his “For every fiver Celtic spend, we’ll spend a tenner” mismanagement at the stadium John Brown played for.

Rangers demise, which began under David Murray and ended under that prince of men Craig Whyte, was entirely self-inflicted. They spent money they never had, trying to emulate a team they could never surpass: The Lisbon Lions.

That is what “buried” Rangers. Not Celtic, Peter Lawwell or his “unseen Fenian hand” at the top of Scottish football.

Rangers died because of their own, sheer, hubris. Pure and simple.

Peter Lawwell probably has better things to do with his time and money. However, if he did send a wee lawyer’s letter to Murray and the Daily Record over this slanderous guff, I suspect the settlement might even cover the cost of another heated driveway!
