NEWCASTLE FANS REFLECT SAD TRUTH: HATE IS NOT JUST A CELTIC RANGERS PROBLEM

Ahead of yesterday’s game I have to admit to being slightly envious of those able to attend the first game of the 2025/26 calendar at Celtic Park.

The last time I was able to attend a game in person was alongside my dad and my dearly departed Uncle Frank back in 2012 when we beat Spartak Moscow to reach the knockout phase of the Champions League.

However, after hearing the utter bile, hatred and filth being spewed forth by a significant number of the visiting Newcastle fans, I’m kind of glad I wasn’t there.

Anti-Irish racism, anti-Catholic bigotry, The Geordies had a sickening songbook yesterday that came close to matching that of Scotland’s Shame themselves.

Now was most of this performative, and aimed purely at winding up the Celtic support? Probably.

Does that make it any more acceptable in modern, civilized society?

No, it doesn’t.

For years I’ve had to listen as ignorant English football pundits have penned thought piece after thought piece about why Celtic, Rangers and indeed any of Scottish football’s teams should never be welcomed into their hallowed league set up.

I’ve heard us described as “vermin”, “neanderthals”, “bigots”, “terrorist sympathizers” and numerous other derogatory terms. Then, on top of that they have the audacity to suggest that cash rich, yet otherwise mediocre teams like Newcastle, Chelsea, et al are “bigger clubs” than either Celtic or Rangers.

Well, yesterday should have been an eye-opener for these clowns, but I suspect it won’t be.

I’d never considered Newcastle to be a team with a particularly nasty fanbase.

In fact, before they got in bed with the Saudi dictatorship, I actually had a fair bit of respect for them. They are a group of fans who always turn out in big numbers despite being about as successful as a Catholic trying to join the Orange Order.

However, yesterday’s shameful display removed whatever lingering semblance of goodwill I had for them. I’m glad we skelped them 4-0 and I hope there are several more doings like that headed their way in the season to come.

I doubt Newcastle are the only club with this hate for Celtic ingrained in them. If, in some unlikely future scenario, Celtic were invited to join English football, and eventually made our way up to The Premier League, I’ll bet that what we heard yesterday would become an almost weekly occurrence.

The disease of racism and bigotry in English football goes all the way back to the 1970s. And just because many of the hooligans have been priced out of buying season tickets by the gentrification of football down south, doesn’t mean the problem has gone away.

But mark my words, over the next few days, this very vocal and extremely obvious outpouring of hatred and bile from the visiting Newcastle fans will either be totally ignored by our media, or waved away as “banter”.

Without getting too political, The UK as a whole and England especially seems to have become a place where so many different kinds of hatred and intolerance have been normalized. I’m glad I no longer live there.

I’m also glad Celtic are not part of the financially doped freakshow that produces entitled muppets like those fans whose team we swept aside yesterday.

Celtic’s future may well lie in a European league, and I’d welcome that.

As for the EPL, I want us as far away from that miserable excuse for a competition as possible.
