AFTER ANOTHER DISASTEROUS PRESS CONFERENCE, IF WILFRIED NANCY’S CELTIC LOSE TOMORROW, IT'S THE END

Wilfried Nancy is under extreme pressure, and it showed in today's conference.
Wilfried Nancy is under extreme pressure, and it showed in today's conference.

I’m writing this now having just watched Wilfried Nancy’s Celtic press conference ahead of tomorrow’s league match away to Dundee United.

I actually feel genuinely sad and sorry for the man, as I’m watching it. He’s clearly feeling the pressure, but trying his best to be calm and constructive.

Unfortunately, I already know that his line of “I don’t have anything to prove to anyone.” whilst admirably brave and defiant, is bound to only add further fuel to the fire of anti-Wilfried Nancy sentiment.

It sounds ridiculous to say this after only 3 games. However, it was three losses, and little sign of improvement across those three games. If anything, we looked even more disjointed and disillusioned in the second half of Sunday’s League Cup Final than we have at any point in Wilfried Nancy’s Celtic career thus far.

I do not mean to show disrespect to the man or the manager Wilfried Nancy, but honestly, listening to his conference today, I’m getting serious Pedro Caixinha vibes. A well-intentioned man, probably a good manager at his own level.

However, it’s becoming painfully apparent that his level is not at the level Celtic need.

It’s never nice watching someone’s hopes and dreams fall apart in real time, but with each conference, Wilfried Nancy seems more frustrated, more disconnected from the reality of the situation and more determined to double-down on his own footballing philosophy.

This isn’t working, and I have very little confidence that it will change tomorrow night. We should be good enough to beat Dundee United, but they will have no fear about facing us. And let’s be honest, whoever we play in our next game will know there has probably never been a better time to play Celtic in the past few years.

It’s cliché to say that, when you manage Celtic, every game is a must win. But this time, we really mean it. Wilfried Nancy needs to win every league game between now and January. I expect both Hearts and Rangers “smell blood” as it were, and will seek to strengthen with new additions in January, with a view to winning the league.

Wilfried Nancy will be long gone by then, if we don’t at least stay in contention in the league until then.

This is one of these times where I would love nothing better than to be proven completely wrong tomorrow night, and Celtic go out and win by 4 or 5 goals, playing exactly the kind of football our manager wants.

I fear though, that will not be the case. As indeed does every Celtic fan I’ve spoken with in the past 48 hours.
