NEW MANAGER FOR THEM, NEW TRAINERS FOR US: CELTIC SOCIAL MEDIA TROLLING IS FUNNY, BUT ALSO SLIGHTLY WORRYING

On one hand it speaks volumes to the gulf between Celtic and the current incarnation of Rangers.
Within moments of the newly crowned “Best Pitch in Scotland Champions” announcing Russell Martin as their new manager on a 3-year deal, Celtic social media accounts made an official announcement of their own:
We’re selling some new Adidas sports shoes.
Celtic Social Media Dig Has Rangers Fans Raging, But Manager is the Main Focus of Anger
The meltdown amongst the mish-mash of rogue genetic material that follows Rangers online has been hilarious and almost universal. And that was before the new manager was even confirmed.
Meanwhile, Celtic sat back, relaxed and said: “How about some new Sambas for the summer, Bhoys and Ghirls?”
It is funny, there’s no denying that. But Celtic will need to have some kind of actual response to what will, I am sure, be the start of a lot of ins and outs at Ibrox over the next few weeks.
The upcoming Ibrox EGM is already set to be a riot, with the penny slowly but surely dropping amongst even the thickest of their supporters that this takeover was not the money-soaked salvation the press sold them for the past few months.

The confirmation of Martin as manager has just solidified that view for many of them. Some of their supporters really were delusional enough to think the likes of Jose Mourinho or Sean Dyche were interested in that job.
As I have said countless times before, Rangers are a toxic brand, with very limited appeal. From a purely managerial standpoint, they have the combined problems of paltry budgets and massively unrealistic fan expectations.
Martin has been out of work since Southampton fired him, but actually, he is probably the kind of manager Rangers need. He can work with limited budgets and achieve stability. However, stability isn’t part of the Ibrox mindset, they expect domination, and that just isn’t going to happen.
Let’s be honest, he’ll do well to last one year, let alone the 3 years his contract stipulates. Rangers need a long-term strategy, but their fans do not have the patience for the short to medium term mediocrity that would entail.
Nevertheless, Celtic cannot be complacent. We had a good laugh today, and although I won’t be ordering these new shoes, I’m sure plenty of others will. However, for Celtic to maintain both their footballing and commercial dominance over our closest challengers, we need more than snappy press releases and new merch teases.
We need new contracts for our star players. We need to see the manager’s future settled as soon as possible. And above all else, we need new signings in to refresh this squad. This needs to start happening before we head off to Lake Como for our pre-season jolly.
Otherwise, tweets like today’s may suddenly lose a lot of their humor.
