Rangers fans like to call Celtic fans “obsessed”. They love to say “it’s all about the Rangers”.
What they, of course, fail to realize is the reality. We watch them, we laugh at them and some of us write mockingly about them. Not because of obsession, but because 1) it’s funny and 2) we know it annoys them.
For a group who love to proclaim “no one likes us, we don’t care” they seem awfully thin-skinned.
Still, if you want to talk about unhealthy obsessions, then look at the Daily Record and their absolutely embarrassing attempts to shoehorn Rangers into everything. I’m not just talking about reports covering other football clubs, but, in today’s case, about other sports entirely.
Golfers Want to Talk Golf, Not Rangers, Daily Record Didn’t Get the Message
The Daily Record managed to grab a quick word with famed American golfer Jordan Spieth on the sidelines of the build-up to The Open Championship.
So, what question would you ask a golf icon like Spieth if you had a few minutes with him?
Would you ask about his 3 major titles or his spell as The World’s Number One Golfer?
Maybe you’d like to ask about his Ryder Cup triumphs?
Perhaps you want to be a bit cheeky and bring up his infamous collapse at the 2016 US Masters?
Nah, that’s not what the Daily Record readers want to read. Afterall, “It’s all about The Rangers” isn’t it?
So, we were treated to the utterly cringeworthy scene of The Daily Record’s Craig Swan asking one of America’s top golfers “So, how many Rangers shares have you bought?”

Spieth’s response when asked about “the famous Glasgow Rangers” was an emphatic and unmistakable “Erm, who?”
Swan assumed, as he freely admits in the article, that since Spieth and his compatriot Justin Thomas put some money into Leeds United when 49ers Enterprises become their majority owners, that the same must apply to Rangers.
Not only had Spieth never heard of Rangers, he had no idea that 49ers Enterprises were involved in any takeover.
“Oh, have they?” was his response when an irate Swan tried to inform him of this, the biggest piece of football news in the entirety of the pocket universe that is Scottish Football journalism.
As a wee reminder, since Swan completely neglected to bring this up in his fumbled attempt at an article, 49ers Enterprises don’t own Rangers. The majority shareholders are Andrew Cavenagh and his consortium. We do not how much, if indeed any money 49ers Enterprises have put into the grand takeover at Snake Mountain.
The owner of the entire 49ers Group, Jed Yorke is on record as saying that any involvement would be “purely advisory”.
So, the answer was already there, had Mr Swan bothered to go back and read what his own paper printed on the subject before embarrassing himself in front of some the world’s best golfers, and most prolific golf journalists.
Some would say that such behavior, in flagrant defiance of good practice, common sense and basic manners, is the definition of obsession.
