This is the common refrain I’ve been presented with over the past few weeks when writing about various players linked with possible moves to Celtic.

However, one deal that finally seems to be concluded, according to multiple sources today, is Celtic’s signing of Swedish international midfielder Benjamin Nygren

Reports emerged earlier this morning (Japan time), that Celtic have indeed got the deal over the line for the versatile creative player.

But just who exactly are Celtic getting with Benjamin Nygren? Let’s Take a closer look.

A lot of the media talk around Nygren since he was initially linked with Celtic a little over a week ago suggested he was coming in as a winger, and potential replacement for Nicholas Kuhn, should the German decide to move on.

It is true that Nygren has played in a wide position at several points throughout his career. However, those who have worked with the player previously believe that he works best in a “number 10” type of role.

Indeed a creative midfield presence with an added goal threat is something Celtic haven't really had since Matt O’Reilly left the club last year.

Nygren certainly seems like he could fulfil this role.

However, in the short term, he will probably deputize for Jota on the flank, until our Portuguese hero is back fully fit, which will hopefully be before the end of the year.

Perhaps the best bit of news about this signing though is just how good a deal it is for Celtic. With his contract mere months away from expiration, Celtic managed to haggle the fee paid to FC Nordsjealland down to just £1.8 million. In today’s market this isn't just a bargain, it’s borderline theft!

Nygren managed an impressive 16 goals in 32 games for the Danish side last season. This is particularly good when you consider that, with the greatest of respect to them, Nordsjaelland aren't a team competing for the title.

Benjamin Nygren is still only 23 and still a maturing player. Naturally, he will need time to find his feet and settle into his new surroundings. However, I think we have managed to unearth a real gem here, at an absolutely amazing price.

Celtic’s scouts have copped a lot of flack in recent times for their seeming lack of preparation, as have our board for their dithering on contract minutiae.

However, the Nygren deal has gone pretty much as smoothly as one could expect. It’s taken less than 10 days from the potential deal getting into the public domain to the contract being signed.

The low fee involved also shows to me that Celtic did their due diligence here and managed to source not only an excellent player, but one who was available for a cost well below his true market value.
