BOSTON CELTICS “STORY” JUST SHOWS THE UTTER PETTINESS OF SCOTLAND’S ANTI-CELTIC PRESS

Updated: Jul 21

Rangers new signing apparently didn't get the memo about "staunchness" requirements.

I woke up this morning, admittedly a bit later than usual after enjoying watching Celtic absolutely thrash the world’s most cash-rich club from the world’s most over-hyped league last night.

So, I set about my daily duty of scanning through the various media outlets, to see what’s happening.

More so though, I wanted to see what kind of linguistic gymnastics the usual suspects would pull to try and, somehow, cast Celtic’s tremendous result yesterday in a negative light.

So, what would it be? A transfer link with one of our best players? A preachy piece about the fact yesterday’s game wasn’t a sell-out? some freshly concocted scandal about one of our players or a member of their extended family?

In the end it was none of the above. I suppose maybe I gave The S*n’s “journalists” too much credit to think they would do anything as creative.

No, instead they relegate the Celtic game to further down the page. Their main story is about what Rangers latest signing chose to wear to his first meeting with his new club. Apparently Djeidi Gassama, the latest player to be plundered from cash-strapped Sheffield Wednesday wore a Boston Celtics shirt for his first trip to Rangers’ training facility.

Yes somehow, the fact that a Rangers player dared to wear a t-shirt with even the flimsiest of tangential connections to Celtic isn’t just headline news, it’s apparently more important than the actual football matches played yesterday.

I guess by that same logic, I should probably be sacked from writing about Celtic. Afterall, my favorite TV show as a child was “Power Rangers”.

In all seriousness, there is a more sinister side to this though. We all know how reactionary, how angry, and, frankly, how stupid some of the hardcore elements of the Denizens of Ibrox can be. The S*n were clearly baiting this especially aggressive, and exceptionally thick elements of the Rangers support with this story.

A quick scan over social media this morning already shows quite a bit of hate being directed at their new signing. Mission accomplished for The S*n it seems.

Remember this is a guy who hasn’t even played a game for them yet. He might turn out to be a decent player, but his first few weeks at Rangers were just made a whole lot more difficult just so The S*n could manufacture a headline to draw attention away from Celtic’s superb win yesterday.

It’s sad, it’s pathetic, but so long as the ignorant rabble continue to give them an audience for it, this drivel will continue to be churned out on a daily basis. And The S*n won’t care if anyone gets hurt in the process.
