BRENDAN RODGERS CALLS OUT “COWARDLY” TABLOID HIT PIECE INSIDER

In Brendan Rodgers we trust.
In Brendan Rodgers we trust.

We were all hoping today that Brendan Rodgers wouldn’t mince his words when asked the difficult questions at his pre-match press conference.

Like many of you, I am sure, I think it’s disgraceful that the club continues to dump all of our media relations responsibilities on the manager.

He was, yet again, called upon to answer for the failings of the board, failings that, ultimately had little if anything to do with his role.

Still, our manager, as he has done so many times throughout his career, embraced the challenge with his signature honesty, aggression and assertiveness.

Rodgers didn’t hold back when asked about The S*n’s hit piece on him, and the club insider who informed it. He said: "It was interesting when I was shown that. My honest take? I thought it was a cowardly action from whoever it is.”

However, what Brendan Rodgers said next perhaps suggests he already has a fair idea who this insidious individual is.

Asked if he was surprised by the article, his response was as frank as it is indicative of the current shambles at Celtic.

Rodgers added: "Was I surprised by it? Not really. I was briefed upon the last time I was here, when I left, and now that I've come back."

However, Rodgers said: “No, I don’t” when asked directly if he knew who it was. One has to wonder though if that was perhaps a response drawn more from his desire to maintain a

dignified silence on the matter, rather than an empirical truth.

Despite all of this, Rodgers still remains open to remaining at Celtic beyond next summer, at least, for the time being.

When asked directly about his future, he gave a positive response, but one with an interesting, or perhaps I should say worrying qualifier attached:

I would love to stay here longer. I've had informal chats with Dermot (Desmond) and Michael (Nicholson) but no offer to consider." Rodgers said enthusiastically.

However, he then added: “If, going forward if I do get offered a deal, there does have to be conditions in that, that allow me to work the best I can."

He wouldn’t be drawn on what those conditions were, but one would suspect that the freedom to recruit players as he deems necessary, free from corporate interference, and the identification and removal of whoever his anonymous nemesis within the corridors of power at Celtic Park is would be pre-requisites of any such deal.

In the meantime, the manager closed out by saying that the most important thing for now is to win on Sunday at Kilmarnock.

And I think that’s a sentiment we all share today.
