CELTIC FANS DEMAND CHANGE: WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Fans have united like never before in the face of ongoing incompetence in the Celtic Boardroom.
Fans have united like never before in the face of ongoing incompetence in the Celtic Boardroom.

After all the secret meetings, newspaper hit-pieces and one especially embarrassing (probably AI-generated) statement, we appear to be at an impasse.

Celtic fans are angry. And this anger is as widespread and as fierce as I have seen it since the genesis of Celts for Change back in the early 90s.

However, as I’ve discussed before, unlike 1994, there is no concrete plan to “Sack the Board” this time around.

Dermott Desmond and his sycophants have their feet firmly planted under the boardroom table at Celtic Park, and there is no indication any of them planning on moving any time soon.

While we have not yet reached a quorum on what exact action to take, more than 400 supporters’ organizations have now put their signatures to a statement condemning the board’s recent conduct and treatment of fans.

This was followed up by a vote of no confidence in the board, endorsed by several of the more prominent Celtic fan organizations. Most importantly however, over the last 48 hours there has been a concerted effort to reach out to as many fans as possible, to listen to ideas, opinions and possible plans of action.

The North Curve have created a survey which has already been distributed to all of the groups and their members, who co-signed the previous statement against the board.

The results of this survey will be discussed at a meeting set for tomorrow, after which a plan of mass action from fans will become clearer.

The irony here is of course, if The Celtic Board had acted anywhere near this quickly with their own fan survey, the results of which they have sat on for over a year due to “bad formatting”, then maybe the current Celtic fan surge for meaningful action could have been avoided.

I expected an ineffectual and token response from the board to the outpouring of anger and the seemingly endless line of people queuing up to demand their removal.

However, I genuinely didn’t think they were naïve or stupid enough to think that their usual “ignore the problem until it goes away” approach would actually work this time.

So many of Celtic’s problems in recent years, in fact almost all of them to some extent, stem from in inability, or more recently an unwillingness, to communicate.

I guess there is a poetic irony in the notion that this same inaction and collective burying of heads in the sand is the very catalyst that has ignited the current Celtic fan movement. A movement that grows stronger and more numerous by the hour.

Tomorrow’s meeting will be interesting. That’s for sure.

Perhaps equally interesting though will be what, if anything, the Celtic Board do beforehand to try to sew division amongst their opponents, to try and halt this fan movement before it truly reaches its full momentum.

The smart thing to do would be to shut up and listen to what fans actually say at the meeting, before responding in a genuine, respectful manner.

However, at the moment, the actions of the board seem to get more desperate and stupider day by day. I don’t think they are smart enough, or in possession of enough humility to keep quiet while fans get together to plan their removal. Their egos simply won’t allow it.
