The news that Danish international striker Kasper Dolberg is on the verge of signing for Celtic, shows there’s still some room for irony in modern football.

Celtic could get the highly rated forward for a knockdown fee, thanks to the owners of his current club, Anderlecht, showing the very same European profligacy that Celtic’s moneymen displayed this past midweek.

Anderlecht banked on having enough in the tank as it stands to make it to European group stage football. However, their 2-0 loss to AEK Athens last night means they won’t even make the Conference League this season.

As a result, the skint Belgian giants are now forced into something of a fire-sale, with Dolberg top of the list.

This means that, despite dropping down to the Europa League, Celtic still offer a far more attractive option to the Denmark star, who will have an eye on European football to cement his place in Denmark’s team for next summer’s World Cup.

Sky’s Anthony Joseph (usually quite a dependable source for all things Celtic transfer related) confirmed that Dolberg is now top of Celtic’s wanted list.

It may not be the ideal scenario of The Champions League, but with a good run in the Europa League and the international exposure that Glasgow Derbies still command, at Celtic, Kasper Dolberg can maintain the profile he needs to remain in the Denmark set-up.

His namesake, our goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, is proof of this.

We should remember as well that it was at Celtic, not Brighton, where Matt O’Riley also first broke into the full Denmark international squad. Despite having played in Spain, France, Germany, The Netherlands and now Belgium, Dolberg is still only 27 and coming into the peak performance period of his career.

He already has 5 goals from his first 8 games for Anderlecht this season.

A fee of between 7 or 8 million pounds appears to be on the cards, which more or less parallels with the rumored fee Celtic will get for Adam Idah, who is reportedly having a medical with Swansea today ahead of finalizing his move there.

With the greatest of respect to Idah, whoever among his reps convinced Swansea to part with that kind of money deserves a massive pay raise.

The Dolberg deal certainly isn’t done yet. However, with time running out and Anderlecht seemingly as desperate to sell as Celtic are to buy, this is one that, hopefully will move along fairly quickly.

We probably won’t see him on the pitch at Ibrox on Sunday, but don’t be surprised if he is signed before then.

Such a signing would certainly go some way to restoring at least a little bit of confidence at Celtic ahead of what has now become an absolutely vital test for our diminished squad this weekend.
