DAILY RECORD JOSE MOURINHO RANGERS STORY IS DISTRACTION AT ITS MOST DESPERATE

Jose Mourinho to Rangers? It must be Derby Weekend
Jose Mourinho to Rangers? It must be Derby Weekend

It’s been a while since we checked in on those bumbling buffoons at the Daily Record sports desk.

However, with the first Glasgow derby of the season now less than 36 hours away, The Record has once again engaged full fantasy mode.

Apparently an “expert” behind the protracted Rangers Takeover believes Jose Mourhinho is the man to replace Russell Martin at Rangers.

Yeah, I’m not making that up. The Daily Record, one of Scotland’s biggest newspapers, actually decided that was a story with enough credibility to run.

The Record has developed something of a penchant in recent days for offering opinion pieces masked as news, offering jobs that don’t exist to managers who have expressed no desire to move.

I refer you to last week’s nonsensical story which ran in both the Record and The S*n, claiming that Brendan Rodgers was the favorite to become the new manager of Nottingham Forest.

That was about a week ago and the man he was supposed to replace, Nuno Espirito Santo remains in post, with no signs he’s about to leave.

Fast forward to today and we have a similar dose of deludamol clearly directed at Rangers fans desperate for anything, any kind of positive news at all, to cling to as, yet again, it becomes clear they’ve been sold a pup by yet another group of false dawn peddlers.

I’m sure the fact that there’s a Glasgow Derby tomorrow is, of course, entirely coincidental to the timing of this “exclusive”!

The “expert” cited in their story is Dubai based Rangers fan Andy Mason. Apparently. Mason played a pivotal role in the Rangers Takeover this summer. Though naturally, the Record’s story offers no details as to what this role was, or why he has any particular insight into the next managerial move of Jose Mourinho.

Part of the wave of false hype, fake hope and lies that was allowed to percolate over the course of several months earlier this year, in the run up to Andrew Cavenagh’s acquisition of Rangers was the recurring rumor of a Jose Mourinho Rangers managerial role.

Like the gullible fools that they are, plenty of the “20 minute loyal” over at Ibrox bought into this nonsense. They really thought they were getting Mourinho and a 50 million transfer war chest.

Instead, they got Russell Martin and a bunch of journeymen thrown together from the English Championship.

Now, personally, I don’t think Martin is a bad manager. But the job that needs done over at Ibrox is genuinely transformational. It will take months if not years, to get that club on the level financially, and competing to any serious degree on the pitch.

The ever-loyal Rangers support now want Martin sacked after 3 League games, and an absolute kicking in Europe, which, let’s be honest, was going to happen no matter who managed the £1.49ers.

Martin won’t be going anywhere. Rangers’ new owners are many things, but reactionary isn’t one of them. Plus, they’ve put in place a corporate structure that ensures they can do what they want, with minimal oversight.

The Record knows this, which is why, alongside the ridiculous Mourinho story they continue to run story after story of new players headed to Ibrox in the next couple of days.

Would Rangers be signing anyone right now if the manager was headed for his P45 imminently?

Neither Celtic nor Rangers are in particularly good shape right now. However, domestically at least Celtic have still managed to get the job done in our opening 3 league games. A similar result tomorrow will see us 9 points clear of Rangers, before the end of August.

Meanwhile, I’m sure Mourinho is sat somewhere quietly contemplating his next move. Mega bucks in Saudi, The glamor of the US, perhaps maybe a return to Portugal and a new project altogether.

Or maybe he’ll choose to throw all that away and go for a “Sash Bash” down at the Bristol Bar with Alex Rae and Nacho Novo?

Time will tell...
