ON CELTIC’S CUP FINAL DAY, DAILY RECORD DISTRACTION ATTEMPT IS UTTER DESPERATION

I know we shouldn’t really be surprised by the utter incompetence, or perhaps willful ignorance we often see from the Scottish media, especially when Celtic are doing well.

But, even by the usual rock-bottom standards of the Daily Record, today represents an exceptionally poor editorial choice.

As Celtic's Cup Final Day Dawns, Daily Record Leads with More Rangers False Hope

Yes, on Scottish Cup Final Day, a Cup tournament that Rangers were eliminated from months ago, The Daily Record’s big sports story is: Jordan Henderson might sign for Rangers.

What's their basis for this? "Erm, well he's mates with Steven Gerrard and we think he might be the next Rangers manager."

That is the full extent of it. No evidence, no primary sources, just pure conjecture.

Spoiler alert: Henderson isnt headed for Ibrox. I know it and you know it. The Daily Record knows it too, bur they are so desperate for anything that will distract from Celtic’s Cup final day, the culmination of another hugely successful campaign, and Rangers ongoing utter failure.

Let’s go into a bit more detail on why this is, once again, total fabrication from what was once Scotland’s leading newspaper.

Henderson is currently on the books of Ajax. He is contracted there until 2026, he is also 35 years old.

So, if the real aim of Rangers potential new owner Andrew Cavenagh is, as I fully believe, to try to somehow turn this basket case of a club into a profitable enterprise, signing a 35-year-old who will have huge wage demands, absolutely zero resale value and will, in all likelihood, retire next summer makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

But then again, the idea of someone as supposedly financially astute as Cavenagh buying into a business that consistently loses as much money as Rangers doesn’t make sense either. These are very strange times we live in.

There’s also Henderson’s own stated goals for next season. He wants to continue to be part of the England squad, and will probably see next summer’s World Cup as his international swansong. Personally, I think it might also be a good time for him to retire completely.

As the previous examples of Jack Butland and our own Joe Hart prove, it doesn’t how good you are playing for Celtic or Rangers, England won’t give you a second thought. To them, in their delusional arrogance, Scotland is a “pub league” and nowhere near the level required for England.

Incidentally when was the last time England actually won anything?

Oh, yeah that’s right, it was before Celtic won the European Cup. Since then, Rangers (RIP) also won a European trophy, as did Aberdeen. Dundee United, Celtic and the resurrected carcass of Rangers have also contest European finals.

Maybe that’s why so many Rangers fans where England tops these days? Perhaps habitual failure, glossed over by extreme arrogance is now an integral part of their culture too.

Anyway, I digress.

Like I said, there is absolutely nothing in this Henderson story. Rangers couldn’t afford him, he won’t go there because it would mean the end of his only reason to continue playing (getting into the England World Cup squad).

Above all else, he has no resale value. Rangers just lost 3 players this week under similar circumstances. I doubt even they are stupid enough to repeat that same mistake yet again.

Meanwhile, Celtic have a Cup final to win, not that the Daily Record seems to care.
