WE ARE ALL WEE JAY! CELTIC SUPERFAN REPRESENTS EVERYTHING GOOD ABOUT OUR CLUB

Jay Beatty, Celtic Superfan

It’s a common cliché to say “some things are bigger than football,” but I’m going to reflect that sentiment to begin this piece.

To all the genuine Rangers fans out there, some of whom I am sure would love nothing better than to see me and my frequent jabs at their expense disappear from the internet forever, that have spoken out in the last 24 hours to unconditionally condemn the sub-human, miserable excuse for a sentient life form who threatened Celtic fan Jay Beatty, I just want to say, thank you, and you have my respect.

Even our rivalry, and all the hate and historical baggage that comes with it, has its limits. Mocking, and threatening violence against someone like Jay, who has never harmed anyone and I’m sure never will, is, thankfully, a line that almost all of us will never cross.

It goes without saying (but I’m going to say it again anyway) that every Celtic fan, indeed every decent human being on this planet, shares this sentiment.

I will not repeat the name of the person who said these vile things about one of Celtic’s most famous fans, nor will I repeat the language he used. Language, that, as my friend and fellow ACSOM contributor John Hughes said today: “Was unacceptable decades ago, if indeed it ever was”.

These vile comments, which this individual has a history of making, are attached to a picture that may or may not be his own.

Now, I’m no oil painting myself, but, suffice to say, I think if I said to one of these AI image creators “please create an image of someone in a Rangers top who looks unwashed, deeply ugly, and almost certainly shouldn’t be left alone with kids” this individual’s visage would appear in milliseconds.

But I’m almost certain the image on his profile isn’t him. And the name attached isn’t his either. Afterall, Twitter (I’ll quit the internet altogether before I ever change that site’s name to suit the whims of that utter b*llend Elon Musk) allows anyone to say almost anything they like, with not even a hint of consequence.

This isn’t the first time Jay, or his family have had to go through this, and, whilst my own words probably don’t mean much on their own, I’m sure plenty of us will have similar feelings to what I am about to say:

Jay Beatty is a young man whose infectious enthusiasm, love of Celtic and pure, unfiltered joy whenever we score could warm even the coldest of hearts. He is a credit to anyone who faces the same challenges in daily life as he does. He is a credit to his family. And he is a credit to the entire Celtic support.

No matter how bad a week I may have had, whenever matchday comes around, and I see Wee Jay bouncing around in front of the Green Brigade, usually with his Hoopy toy in tow, the world suddenly seems like a much brighter place.

I think the last word on this should go to Martin Beatty, Jay’s dad. After being made aware of this latest anonymous attack on his son he closed out his own statement with this: “the love and respect for Jay far outweighs the hate and to all those that have shown him so much love over the years, we are so grateful. Thank you”
