AMBROSINO CELTIC LINK: KEITH JACKSON AND THE DAILY RANGER GET IT WRONG YET AGAIN

The Daily Record Sports Desk Strikes Again!
The Daily Record Sports Desk Strikes Again!

I don’t like to single out other writers for personal criticism, though unfortunately in the sphere of writing about Scottish football, the widespread incompetence and belligerence dictates that sometimes such action is, unfortunately, necessary.

Which brings me to this morning’s Daily Record, and Keith Jackson’s, frankly, idiotic comments about Giuseppe Ambrosino, Celtic’s latest transfer target.

Sometimes, you just read something and think: “Is this person drunk, mentally impaired or just at the wind up?

In all honesty, with the Daily Record it could be any or all of the above.

Anyway, when asked about the prospect of Napoli’s Giuseppe Ambrosino joining Celtic on a loan with an option to buy, as was first suggested by Sky Sports Italia yesterday, Jackson said the following:

"He's an Italian U21 international. You might look at that and think 'what's the difference between that and Callum Osmand?”

I think, Keith, you have just answered your own question there mate.

He’s an Italian under-21 international. He played for the Azzurri at last month’s European Under-21 championships, where they made the top 8.

He’s also played for multiple Italian league clubs at Serie B level.

This is no slight on Callum Osmand, who by all measures looks to be a fantastic prospect, but Ambrosino’s level of experience, even for one so young, is miles ahead of playing for Fulham reserves!

I honestly don’t know what point Jackson is trying to make with such a silly comment, other than to needlessly wind people up. And maybe that’s the whole point. It was clear from the outset that Jackson had little idea who Ambrosino was.

In such scenarios, the smart thing to do is either admit this is the case and recuse yourself from the discussion, or, and maybe I'm being a bit unreasonable by suggesting this, but how about doing some actual journalism!

Ten minutes of research would show you that Ambrosino not only has vastly more experience than Osmand, but he’s also a totally different type of striker.

I mean, I’d never even heard of the guy until yesterday afternoon, but after spending literally a little over half an hour looking into his background and checking out some highlights online, I can see what Ambrosino could potentially offer Celtic in an attacking role.

Keith Jackson is paid a whole lot more than any of us who write for the various Celtic fan media outlets. And yet he can’t even be bothered to conduct basic research, the kind of stuff that my readers don't just hope to see, they expect it.

The problem with Scottish football journalism is perhaps the same as the problem blighting Scottish football itself. Too many people in positions of power have become lazy, casual and allowed to fumble their way through their jobs each day without any semblance of accountability.

Scottish football fans, and indeed the wider Scottish public deserve better.
