This is no ordinary Sportscene-style highlight reel however. This is a full-fledged feature length documentary, directed by celebrated film-maker Asif Kapadia.

Kapadia is no stranger to sports documentaries. He also helmed the multi-Bafta winning Senna, a 2010 documentary about the triumphant but all too short life of Brazilian Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna.

He went on to win an Oscar for his 2015 documentary Amy, covering the similarly short yet highly eventful career of noted musician Amy Winehouse.

In recent times, the film-maker has also been behind the camera for documentaries about Diego Maradona and tennis great Roger Federer.

However, it is his latest project, simply titled Kenny Dalglish that is sure to have Celtic and Liverpool fans eagerly anticipating it’s UK premiere later this month.

The documentary will come to selected cinemas across the UK and Ireland on October 29th and 30th.

However, if you can’t make it along to one of these special events, then don’t worry, the documentary will be available to view online soon afterwards.

It’s set to debut on Amazon Prime Video on November 4th.

As well as his glittering football career in both Scotland and England, the documentary also dives deep into the life of this footballing icon off the pitch. With the story in his own words, and through those of his family, through archive footage and never before seen interviews.

The film also has a poignant political edge. In the wake of the Hillsborough disaster of 1989 and the utterly disgusting attempts from both The S*n newspaper and the Thatcher-led Tory government to pin the blame for the tragedy on the people of Liverpool.

It was at that time that Dalglish stood up, not just as the manager of a football club but as a champion of the oppressed, as a leader for a city in mourning.

It’s truly heart-wrenching stuff, and this documentary promises to pull no punches.

If you’re interested, the trailer for Kenny Dalglish is now available to view online. I’ll also be doing a review of the film for the ACSOM Blog sometime soon.
