THE S*N'S LATEST RANGERS TAKEOVER NONSENSE IS THE ULTIMATE IN TENUOUS STRAW-CLUTCHING

Sorry Zombies, none of that 8.5 billion is coming to you.
Sorry Zombies, none of that 8.5 billion is coming to you.

There’s been a recurring theme with almost all of the coverage of this Rangers Takeover story since it first emerged in February.

Both The S*n and the Daily Record love to throw out talk about huge sums of money, with any link whatsoever, no matter how tenuous and tangential to Rangers.

Rangers Takeover Totally Unconnected to NFL Sale

The S*n’s “8.5 billion” figure today is just the latest example of this nonsense.

Yes, 49ers Enterprises, who may or may not from one part of a consortium who may, or may not, acquire a 51% stake in Rangers this summer have just reached a deal to sell a small share of their NFL franchise for 8.5 Billion US Dollars.

This has no bearing whatsoever on any potential deal to buy Rangers, no matter how hard The S*n tries to imply otherwise.

The NFL operates in a completely different financial stratosphere to even the top teams in European football. This is a sport where fairly middling players can earn 8 figures per year.

There’s a reason why, from day one, any public show of interest in taking control of Rangers has shown the vulture-capitalist Andrew Cavenagh front and center, as opposed to anyone from the 49ers.

Jed Yorke, the owner of the San Francisco 49ers and a man who actually has the financial power to make deals like the one The S*n tried desperately to somehow link to Rangers today, has already laid out the limits of any potential involvement from 49ers Enterprises in Rangers.

As I reported previously, though the tabloids largely ignored it, Jed Yorke said weeks ago that there would “no financial crossover” between Rangers, Leeds United or any of the group’s other financial interests with their core business of the NFL.

He said they may offer advice and suggestions for “best practices” in terms of marketing and management, but that’s it.

Judging by how Leeds United have fared since the 49ers Enterprises took control of them, Rangers fans better hope its Cavenagh rather than the 49ers who end up calling the shots.

They’d also better hope he’s far wealthier and more gullible than he’s letting on.

As I have said before, and I remain consistent in this belief, the only way this takeover works is through austerity. I

t the Rangers takeover does actually happen, and I still maintain that is an “if”, Rangers will, for the first time in their 13-year history, be forced to live within their means.

Good luck selling that business model to the uber-staunch, ultra-entitled denizens of Snake Mountain!

Oh, and it goes without saying at this point, but I'll say it anyway:

Don't buy The S*n!
