BREAKTHROUGH: CELTIC BOARD FINALLY BREAKS SILENCE, NOW SO WILL WE!

Together, fans can make things happen. Last night proved so.
Together, fans can make things happen. Last night proved so.

There’s no denying that the recent silent protest was perhaps the most controversial, and certainly most divisive of the numerous actions taken by the Celtic Fans Collective in recent weeks.

All these actions were taken with a common aim: to pressure the Celtic Board into meaningful dialogue on the 7 key issues raised in an open letter to the club cosigned by hundreds of supporters’ groups, including ACSOM.

However, whether you agreed with the nature of these action or not, they do seem to have achieved the intended result. The Celtic Board finally caved to fan pressure last night and reached out to the Celtic Fans Collective to ask for a meeting to discuss the ongoing issues at the club.

Celtic Board Talks are Just the Start, Fan Pressure Must Continue Until we See Tangible Results

In a communique, released late last night on social media, The Celtic Fans Collective confirmed that they have postponed tonight’s planned 29-minute silent protest, scheduled to take place during our Europa League tie against Braga.

However, it’s important to emphasize the wording here. The protest has been postponed, not cancelled.

I think it’s not just the more cynical amongst us who are treating this sudden olive branch from the Celtic Board, on the eve of a European game which will be televised and for which the club have already admitted they’ve struggled to shift tickets, with more than a wee bit of suspicion.

Is this a genuine willingness to engage, or is it merely a stalling tactic to get fans onside for tonight’s game, and perhaps punt some more Henrik Larsson merch over the next few days?

Well, thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long to find out.

The Celtic Fans Collective and other supporters’ groups will meet with a delegation from the Celtic Board, including both CEO Michael Nicholson and CFO Chris McKay next Monday, October 6th.

They will discuss fan concerns about the current running of the club, and those running it.

In light of this, as an act of good faith, the Celtic Fans Collective confirmed the postponement of the planned silent protests for tonight and our next game this coming weekend.

However, in a cordial, but firm, statement, the Celtic Fans Collective confirmed that this meeting alone does not mean the end of fan actions against the board.

Their statement added: “We hope and expect that fans will now receive honest and full communication from the club.”

Whilst we certainly hope that is the case, I for one remain unconvinced so far. However, if those leading the Celtic Fans Collective and the other supporters’ groups involved are willing to give the Celtic Board the benefit of the doubt, for the time being at least, then I guess I can too.

In the meantime, we’ve got a European game to win, and I know everyone there tonight, regardless of how they feel about the board or the recent protests will be 100% behind Brendan and the Bhoys.
